LIVERPOOL STREET STATION RE-DEVELOPMENT


Total rebuild of this important railway station. The Firm was appointed by British Rail to undertake the total M&E Services and Systems Management, Value Engineering and Conceptual Design. In addition, all engineering systems have been Project Managed by the Firm including the 1989 Section 12 - Underground Stations - Fire Precautions requirements.
Individual aspects include:
Concourse with full M&E Services and Systems; Public Information Display Systems; Main Indicator Board; Ticket Hall; platform-based accommodation; Red Star Parcels Facilities and Offices; Production Manager's Offices; four separate entrances; High-level Retail Trading Areas; Restaurants and fast-food outlets; Modifications to the Great Eastern Hotel; new 50 Liverpool Street fully air conditioned Office Building. WORLD STUDENT GAMES, ATHLETICS STADIUM



Full Olympic-standard outdoor Athletics facilities together with: 80m indoor warm-up track; full training and warm-up facilities including indoor high jump and long jump; 180,000 sq ft indoor conditioned accommodation for Competitors, Officials and Administrative Staff; seating for 10,000 Spectators; area floodlighting for 1,500 lux at 6000oK - the first UK facility meeting the Eurovision colour TV standard; Telephone, Fax and Data requirements for full Press coverage. As an extension of the original appointment, the Firm were appointed to implement the Taylor Inquiry [Hillsborough Disaster] recommendations regarding all forms of communication viz radio, telephone, crowd-control, etc.

CHELSEA BRIDGE WHARF, LONDON



Regeneration of a mixed-use river-side site to provide Residential, Leisure, Hotel, Office and Retail accommodation consisting of: 608 flats, a 200 bedroom hotel, 8,490m2 of business space, 2,800 m2 of restaurants/bars, 820 m2 of health club, and 810 car parking spaces. Also included is a public riverside walk linking into Battersea Park. The project required considerable experience related to Master-planning; Environmental Impact Assessment; Computational Fluid Dynamics 3D-Modelling; Fire Engineering; Petroleum Act; Building Control; Wind Pattern Assessment; Acoustic Engineering; and, Value Engineering. The Firm was chosen to undertake the Conceptual Design of the Development because of considerable knowledge and experience of this type of technically demanding consultancy work.

Project Management and Value Engineering of the M&E Services for TML at this large facility on the UK side of the Channel Tunnel.. The Firm were appointed to retrack the  M&E Services Design in order to maintain the budgetary constraints and technical parameters expected by the Client.

 GCHQ NEW COMPLEX, CHELTENHAM



New site and buildings to house the UK Government Communications Headquarters. In addition to office accommodation for 4,000 persons, the complex houses one of the largest computer centres and UPS systems in Europe.
The Firm was appointed by the PFI team to undertake the Workplace Engineering Consultancy and the Conceptual Design of the HVAC Systems. The Firm were also appointed to undertake the Facade Engineering in conjunction with the Architects and to carry out Computational Fluid Dynamics [CFD] analysis of the Office spaces and Computer Hall - resulting in the largest CFD Model undertaken in the UK to date.

HSBC LAIKI BANK, NICOSIA - NEW HEADQUARTERS



Appointed by the Bank - partly owned by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank - to be their International Consultants advising upon the Workplace, Environmental and Building Engineering aspects of the Bank's new Headquarters Building in Nicosia.
The Bank's vision was for a Landmark building taking into account the truly international issues that would push forward the frontiers of office design. Awards and accolades from a wide variety of sources confirms the success of the office accommodation.
Underfloor air-movement systems and furniture-located uplighters are only part of the energy-efficient approach conceived by AWM that commenced with a totally integrated design. AWM worked closely with the Architects on every element of the building resulting in an advanced building envelope that acts as an environmental moderator taking advantage of the external climatic condition when appropriate.

MERCURY COMMUNICATIONS, BRACKNELL

Fitout of the old ICL European Headquarters now occupied by Mercury to achieve 150,000 sq ft of prestige HQ office building forming the new Research and Development facility as well as a southern Service Management Centre for Corporate and Major Customers.
The use of a bespoke, integrated, energy-efficient furniture design - incorporating Localised Air Filtration and Personal Control - permitted minimum use of cooling in an otherwise high IT usage building. The new personalised approach to air movement and filtration negated the need to uprate the air-conditioning for the additional technology saving £124K in capital cost and £19K per annum in running costs.

Value Engineering and Design Brief for the second building of a 25-Acre development for owner-occupation by this computer hardware manufacturer. In addition, Andrew Wilkes was responsible for the Master-Planning of the whole Site when a Senior Partner of another Consulting Engineering practice.

Workplace Engineering Consultancy - including Architectural, Engineering, Cost Planning & Control and Project Management - for the complete fitout of the old ICL European Headquarters. The building is now occupied by Mercury - part of Cable & Wireless plc - to achieve 90,000 sq ft of advanced accommodation and forms a new Research and Development facility as well as a southern Service Management Centre for Corporate and Major Customers.

This specific project stemmed from an Accommodation Strategy developed by Andrew Wilkes for the whole of the Mercury property portfolio and was part of an expansion of the 210,000sq ft Bracknell Campus.

Accommodation includes:

The use of a bespoke, integrated, energy-efficient furniture design - incorporating Localised Air Filtration and Personal Control - permitted minimum use of cooling in an otherwise high IT usage building. The new personalised approach to air movement and filtration negated the need to uprate the air-conditioning for the additional technology saving £124K in capital cost and £19K per annum in running costs.

Additionally, the space planning and furniture design created a 20% improvement in overall occupational densities. This was achieved whilst creating an uncluttered, vibrant and spacious working environment that has been acclaimed by Staff, Managers and Visitors alike.

Other support services such as Lighting, Power, Voice and Data, etc were also updated using the latest technology where appropriate and affordable.

This Building now houses one of the most advanced office environments in Europe and has created a customer-facing ability that forms part of the overall marketing and corporate image of Mercury.

In addition, high levels of satisfaction for office users together with business process re-engineering activity, improved the overall office productivity and corporate efficiency well ahead of Mercury's business plan.

MERCURY COMMUNICATIONS

Workplace Engineering and Facilities Management Consultancy for the total Mercury UK accommodation portfolio. The appointment related to an overall review of office space requirements being formulated into an Accommodation Strategy which has been progressively implemented.
The appointment was a continuation of the 12-month secondment of Andrew Wilkes as Head of Mercury's Facilities & Property Group that undertook a complete review of all the activities of the 320-strong F&P department. The activities included: the property portfolio; accommodation; catering; security; reception & telephone operators; cable entry permissions; Architectural & Engineering Design; documentation management; etc.

 

 

TOTAL OIL HEADQUARTERS, LONDON

Workplace Engineering Consultancy for Total Oil associated with their migration from their Kensington Offices. The highly clean environmental requirements were especially to Total Oil as the premises housed their computer centre - the hub of oil trading activity.

 

 

CENTRAL TELEVISION, HESKETH HOUSE, LONDON

Environmental Consultancy addressing the problems encountered with an old building that was unable to cope with the additional burden of a modern office and television production unit.

 

 

SOUTH WEST WATER HQ, EXETER

Workplace Engineering Consultancy involving advanced workplace design. The work was allied to the business process re-engineering activities associated with a 120-person Customer Support Centre. AWM undertook an pre-change evaluation survey as part of an Analysis of Functional Need. This consisted of an Environmental Psychology Questionnaire and User Consultation Sessions which was carried out prior to the design synthesis activity.

The evolved solution for SWW was undertaken in conjunction with the Users and this resulted in a radically different approach to the working environment. This included a displacement ventilation system with Localised Air Filtration retrofitted into the existing furniture systems. The personal influence that occupants now have has contributed significantly to the increased productivity being experienced. In addition, a £100K Cap-Ex saving and £14K per annum Op-Ex saving over an air-conditioned solution was obtained.

The implementation of the design included for furniture to be modified in such a way as to conform with the latest HSE & EC Directives that have extended the life of the furniture systems by a further 10-15 years for a cost of approximately £175 per workstation.

US-BASED CLIENT - COMPUTER CENTRES

Appointed to undertake a series of strategic, devolved Computer Centres to undertake the centralised computer services for the Group.
In addition to the highly complex technical facilities such as: cascade protection and UPS systems, the large frame computer needs required specialist design capability from the Firm associated with close control air-conditioning. Large computer equipment, loads and networks have all been evaluated by the Firm and designed to be a low-energy solution.
One primary purpose was to create a pragmatic, low cost facility using current-knowledge technology yet dynamic enough to impress internal and potential external customers. This was achieved by a combination of 'theatrical' lighting design that highlighted specific computer equipment upon which a visiting customer's account was based; a visitor walk-through journey that segregated the 'clean' environment from the visiting personnel using screens and air curtains; a 'front-office/back-office' concept that created quality emphasis of finishes, etc where needed.

New 500,000sq ft Book Warehouse, Sorting, Distribution and Office facility creating a new European Hub for the largest Book Distribution company in the UK. As part of the multi-national Random House book publishing house, TBS required advanced integration of computer and communications systems.
In addition to the offices and high-bay storage areas, AWM were responsible for the site infrastructure and the off-site utilities.

This project is for the creation of a facility to launch new concepts emanating from Jaguar Cars. The first project so launched will be the X200 mid-sized car and the work is critical to the rest of the X200 programme. In addition to a 300-seat auditorium using low energy displacement ventilation concepts, large volume display areas, workshops and associated areas have been designed. The building also contains the Press and Major Presentation Areas as well as Dealer Training Showrooms and Lecture Rooms. The main entrance contains a Museum Display area.

ENGINE TESTING AND RESEARCH FACILITY, PARIS

Feasibility Study and full costing for the creation of one of the most advanced facilities of its type in the world. The Firm was specifically selected to undertake this technically demanding exercise because of their knowledge of international standards and a detailed understanding of the Motor Car Industry. In addition to the M&E Services aspects, the Firm undertook the IS, Acoustic and Infrastructure aspects of the Study.
